LIVING MEMORIES

During his workday as a Wilmington police officer, Larry Redding was involved in a near-fatal car crash. Not even expected to live, he remained comatose for weeks following the accident. To the amazement of his doctors and family, Larry emerged from the coma, and set out to regain his physical and mental strength. The following series of photographs illustrate his struggle and triumph.

Larry lies dazed in his hospital bed, beneath a photo taken of him before his accident.

Lori winces as she watches her husband Larry undergo painful physical therapy.

Larry and Lori go over his "homework" in his room at the rehab hospital.

In the rehab pool, Larry relearns the skill of walking with the help of his physical therapists.

Lori submits to exhaustion in her office. On the door hangs a balloon Larry gave to her two years previous on Valentine's Day.

The family's dachshund Cashie, who missed Larry greatly, shows her concern.
